What is PPOTA?

PPOTA (Historic Towns and Places On The Air) is an amateur radio program encouraging operators to activate and make contacts from historic towns and culturally significant places worldwide. It combines a passion for amateur radio with an appreciation of global cultural heritage.

Whether you're an activator taking your portable station to a historic UNESCO site, or a hunter collecting contacts from your home station, PPOTA offers a unique way to enjoy amateur radio while promoting cultural preservation. Each eligible historic site is assigned a unique reference code (e.g., PPMY-0001 for Malaysia).

Where does the name "PPOTA" come from?

PPOTA is a Spanish acronym. The program started as "Pueblos y Parajes On The Air":

• Pueblos (in Spanish: "towns / villages")
• Parajes (in Spanish: "places / historic sites")
• On The Air (the international ham-radio term, kept in English)

Put together: Pueblos Parajes On The Air = PPOTA. It translates to "Historic Towns and Places On The Air" in English, which is why Malaysian hams know it as the 9M PPOTA program.

How It Works

• Activators set up their station within the town or place, or within a maximum radius of 200 meters from its buildings, and make at least 5 QSOs.
• Hunters contact activators from their home stations. QSOs are validated automatically when the activator sends their log.
• Activations are published to the community so everyone knows when and where historic activations are happening.
• Awards (digital diplomas) are earned by completing activations or hunting unique historical references worldwide.

Eligibility Rules

• Accepted: Towns, places, and historic sites of cultural interest — including UNESCO World Heritage Sites, National Heritage monuments, historic districts, and archaeological sites.
• Criteria: Fewer than 5,000 inhabitants, associated with rural areas, and built in 1999 or earlier.
• Excluded: Modern commercial buildings, non-historic parks, and restricted private properties without public access.
• Public access: The historical site must be accessible to the public (free, paid, or permit-based).
• Coordinates: Must point directly to the monument or the center of the historic town.

Activation Requirements

• Operator must be within the town or place, or within a maximum radius of 200 meters from its buildings. The activator may not activate their own declared QTH or habitual residence.
• Minimum 5 QSOs with different stations, on any band or allowed mode, all within the same UTC day (00:00 to 23:59).
• Log must be submitted within 15 days of the activation, including callsigns, date, UTC time, band, mode, and reference.
• Reference code format: PP prefix + country code (e.g., MY for Malaysia) + sequential number.
