The Program Overview

Pueblos y Parajes On The Air, better known in Malaysia as 9M PPOTA, is an amateur radio program that pairs a passion for radio with an appreciation of global cultural heritage. Operators set up portable stations inside historic towns, monuments, and heritage sites, and share those places with listeners around the world.

Each eligible place carries a unique reference code, numbered PPMY-0001 onwards for Malaysia. Activators must operate within the town or place, or within a maximum radius of 200 meters from its buildings, and gather at least 5 QSOs with different stations within the same UTC day.

A radio contact from a historic town is more than a signal; it is a digital handshake across centuries.

From the prehistoric caves of Lenggong Valley to the colonial streets of George Town and Melaka, each reference is a node in a growing network of cultural discovery. Logs must be submitted within 15 days of activation, with callsigns, date, UTC time, band, mode, and reference.

Eligible references are places of cultural interest with fewer than 5,000 inhabitants, associated with rural areas, built in 1999 or earlier, and open to the public. The name PPOTA comes from the Spanish "Pueblos y Parajes On The Air".
